Riders crossing the open western plains at golden hour

June 25–27, 2027 · Wall, South Dakota

Artist Ride 2027

Three days in the saddle. A living portrait of the American West.

The Ride Is

MORE THAN JUST A PHOTOSHOOT

The Shearer’s Artist Ride brings painters, sculptors, photographers, and writers into the heart of the frontier. For three days they ride alongside working cowboys, capturing the light, the dust, and the enduring spirit of the West as it truly is — unhurried, unposed, and unforgettable.

The ride begins at first light on Friday, June 25th, and closes at sundown on Sunday, June 27th. Each day carries its own rhythm — the cool of dawn, the heat of the trail, and the long amber evenings made for painting and reflection. Reserve your place early; the ride is limited to keep the circle small and the experience true.

The Location

Wall, South Dakota

North of Wall, South Dakota, the Shearer family ranch stretches along the Cheyenne River where it has torn its path through the plains, and the land falls away into rugged, eroded breaks of ash-gray clay and stone. Deep coulees wind between cedar-dotted ridgelines, and above it all the sky opens in a vast, unbroken vault of light. Here, on this working ranch, the river’s story is written on every slope, every trail, and every shadow.

What Artists Can Expect

The Days Ahead of You

Ride With Working Cowboys

Move with a real cattle outfit across open range. No staged scenes — only the authentic work of the trail, captured as it unfolds before you.

Time to Make Your Work

Long light and quiet camp evenings leave room to paint, sketch, shoot, and write. Bring your tools; the West will bring the rest.

A Fellowship of Makers

Share the fire with fellow artists who see the world as you do. Lasting friendships and honest critique come as naturally as the dust on your boots.

Everything Handled

Horses, meals, and camp are seen to. Arrive ready to work and let the outfit carry the logistics of the trail.
